## General Process for Setting Up a Free Zone Company in the UAE

### 1. Select a Free Zone

The first step is to identify the free zone that best suits the business. Each free zone has its own laws, regulations, permitted activities, and licensing framework.

### 2. Choose the Type of Entity

Common legal forms for free zone businesses include:

- Free Zone Limited Liability Company (FZ LLC)
- Free Zone Company (FZ Co.)
- Free Zone Establishment (FZE)
- Branch Office

### 3. Determine Business Activities

The intended business activities must be selected before applying for a license. Each free zone has its own list of permitted activities, and some free zones are more specialized than others.

Common activity categories include:

- Commercial trade
- Consultancy services
- Marketing and advertising
- Media and entertainment
- Research and development
- Education and training
- Healthcare and medical services
- Hospitality and tourism
- Real estate development and management
- Construction and engineering services
- Energy and utilities services
- Financial services and investment management
- Legal and professional services
- E-commerce and online retail
- Freelancing and entrepreneurship

### 4. Reserve the Company Name

The company name must be reserved with the relevant authority and must comply with UAE naming rules.

Trade name requirements generally include:

- The trade name must include the legal structure suffix, such as FZ LLC, FZ Co., or FZE.
- The trade name must not contain inappropriate or offensive words.
- The trade name must be compatible with the selected economic activities.
- The trade name must not include the names of rulers, government agencies, or names and logos of government bodies.
- The trade name must not already be registered by another company.
- The trade name and trademark must be approved by the Department of Economic Development and the Ministry of Economy.
- Trade name certificates are subject to renewal.

### 5. Apply for a License

After deciding the business type and activities, the company must apply for a license from the relevant free zone authority. The license defines the scope of business operations and applicable regulations.

### 6. Select Business Space and Location

UAE free zones provide different options for office space, factory space, land, or virtual office registration, depending on the license type and business requirements.

Office space requirements may depend on:

- Number of employees
- Type of commercial activity
- License category
- Free zone regulations

Office spaces may be fully equipped or partially furnished and can typically be rented or purchased after the commercial license is issued. In most cases, the free zone authority issues the rental contract.

### 7. Open a Corporate Bank Account

A corporate bank account is required to conduct business in the UAE.

### 8. Hire Employees

Once the business is established, the company can hire employees and secure the required work permits.
